Summertime often means vacation time. It\u2019s a happy, fun time of year \u2013 but it\u2019s also a time when you really need to go the extra mile to protect yourself from identity theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are some common sense pointers you can follow to make sure you keep your identity your own while on vacation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Never leave your purse or wallet unattended.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Memorize all your PINs and passwords so you don\u2019t have to carry them with you. Be aware of your surroundings whenever using an ATM or entering your PIN to protect your information.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Avoid carrying extra credit cards, Social Security cards, or other identifying information that you won\u2019t immediately need in your wallet.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Don\u2019t bring frivolous documentation with you. Talk with a travel professional before you leave and find out what you will and won\u2019t need. Only pack essential paperwork.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Make two photocopies of all important paper documentation and keep them in separate areas of your luggage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Before you leave, contact your post office<\/a> and have your mail stopped. Alternatively, ask a neighbor or family member to bring in your mail while you\u2019re away. You don\u2019t want mail or newspapers piling up while you\u2019re away.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Keep a list of the credit cards and personal documentation you\u2019ve brought with you (excluding account numbers!) and store it in a safe place wherever you\u2019re staying. That way, if something goes wrong, you have a quick inventory to refer to.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. If you discover some of your personal information is missing, contact the authorities, credit card companies, etc., as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Most of all, help yourself avoid identity theft by following your instincts. Always be aware of your surroundings and never give criminals the opportunity to take advantage of you.
